Compensation and Benefits
The salary is competitive and is negotiable depending on the strength of qualifications. This is a CSU Management Personnel Plan (MPP) position with an attractive benefits package which includes but is not limited to: a vacation accrual rate of 16 hours per month; 12+ paid holidays; excellent choice of medical, dental and vision insurance, long term disability coverage, life insurance; and retirement benefits. Job Summary

Reporting directly to the President, the Executive Director of Government Relations is responsible for all local, state and federal governmental and advocacy programs for Fresno State. The Executive Director is principally responsible for the development and management of strategies to inform and influence public policy at the local, state and federal levels on issues and in areas of interest to Fresno State and to advise Fresno State on legislative matters that may affect it.

The Executive Director is responsible for managing a wide range of complex and politically sensitive legislative, funding, and issue-oriented interactions as well as campus initiatives designed to advance the mission and priorities of the campus. In conjunction with senior campus leadership, this position shares responsibility for elevating the visibility and public funding for the campus. The Executive Director will mediate and/or advocate for Fresno State interests and build relations with other organizations and entities whose interests are similar or whose functions affect Fresno State.

Given the importance of coordinating government relations across the University, the Executive Director is responsible for working in conjunction with a variety of individuals across the campus as well as in the systemwide Chancellor's Office.

Key Qualifications
  • Detailed knowledge of the organization, functions, process and procedures of the California Legislature, Executive Branch, and/or state higher education.
  • Knowledge and experience in regards to policy making at both the State and Federal levels.
  • Understanding of California's budgetary and policy support for the California State University.
  • Knowledge of higher education current issues and challenges.
  • Detailed knowledge of Central Valley's federal and tribal representatives.
  • Detailed knowledge of the governing bodies of local surrounding counties and cities.
  • Knowledge of campus policies and initiatives related to diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity and ability to foster an inclusive workplace where diversity and individual differences are valued

Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university
  • Minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in a legislative or higher education office.
