Job Description

The University of Nevada, Reno is recruiting for a Director, Government and Community Relations. Under the direction of the Vice President of Government and Community Engagement, provides assistance in the development and implementation of the University's governmental engagement program. Cultivates and enhances the University's relationships at the federal, state, and local government levels.
  • Establishes and implements short- and long-range organizational goals, objectives, strategic plans, policies, and operating procedures; monitors and evaluates programmatic and operational effectiveness, and effects changes required for improvement.
  • Establishes and maintains constructive relationships with elected and appointed officials on a federal, state, and local level and invests considerable time and energy in prioritized networking activity.
  • Understands, communicates, and advocates University priorities to governmental officials, local and national organizations and other government entities on key legislative issues related to higher education.
  • Serves as a key representative for the University at legislative sessions, before State bodies, and Federal agencies in support of institutional goals and objectives.
  • Participates with on institutional planning, policy development, and problem resolution.
  • Develop, lead, and implement an overall strategic community outreach
  • Assists in the coordination of conferences, tours with elected officials, workshops, symposia, and other events.
  • Prepares communications to and for key stakeholders, including the President and Senior Leadership, regarding pertinent issues on legislative changes; develops materials in support of the government relations agenda, such as talking points, legislative summaries, factsheets, testimony, reports, and letters.
  • Apprises the President and senior leadership of pertinent legislative issues, external factors, and policy proposals and actions that could impact the University.
  • Serves as liaison on various committees on issues that arise where the President's Office needs representation with other offices inside and outside the University and carry out special projects as assigned by the President and/or VP & Chief of Staff. Communicates regularly with high-ranking individuals inside and outside the University. Represents the President or VP in community relations outreach as needed, including providing information or university presentations.


Required Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree and four (4) years of professional work experience; OR

Master's degree and two (2) years of professional work experience.

Related Experience: Experience developing relationships with organizations and agencies; organizing and executing events; demonstrated ability to communicate information to stakeholders; exposure to legislative processes.

Grants-in-Aid for Faculty Employees
