Parks, Recreation & Facilities Department - Public Assembly Facilities Division
The Portland Parks, Recreation, and Facilities Department is comprised of 160 full-time and over 250 seasonal staff dedicated to enhancing the quality of life in Portland, Maine. They achieve this by operating cultural venues, running community programs (including Before and After School, Swim Lessons, and Senior Adult programs), and maintaining public buildings, waterfront infrastructure, 70 parks, 40+ miles of trails, 13 cemeteries, and 30 playgrounds. Their diverse team, including Park Maintainers, Lifeguards, Event Managers, Horticulturalists, and many others, works collaboratively to provide spaces and opportunities for social connection, recreation, and community development.
Job Summary
Performs a variety of semi-skilled maintenance, event setup, breakdown and custodial work at the Parks, Recreation & Facilities. Work is performed under general supervision and requires independent judgment.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Plans and carries out daily custodial and event setup/breakdown operations. Develops work orders and projects..
- Performs basic maintenance functions including light carpentry and plumbing repairs. Also performs painting projects as needed..
- Performs event setup and breakdown functions including setting tables, chairs, pipe & drape and other event related activities.
- Maintains lighting systems by cleaning and lamp replacement.
- Cleans and maintains ventilation systems; changes filters.
- Oversees and participates in snow removal around the facilities.
- Maintains, orders and procures supplies for maintenance and custodial work.
- Performs related work as required.
Required Skills & Experience:
- Experience in maintenance and custodial work and graduation from high school; or equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the following knowledges, abilities and skills.
- Working knowledge of the tools, equipment, methods, materials and skills used in maintenance, event and custodial work.
- Knowledge of and ability to follow occupational and safety rules; knowledge of hazards and safety precautions in maintenance and custodial work; knowledge of chemical hazards involved in custodial work
- Ability to follow oral and/or written instructions.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors and co-workers.
Special Qualifications:
- Must possess a valid Maine Class C driver's license
- Must have and maintain a good driving record
Expected Hours/Schedule:
This position is 40 hours per week, with a varied schedule throughout the year to include nights, weekends, and holidays, with the possibility to include overtime.

Salary & Benefits:
This is a union position, Labor & Trades Grade 16, with a starting pay range of $23.08 - $25.88 per hour, based on prior relevant years of experience.
