City of Portland - PAF Operations Supervisor 
Public Assembly Facilities Division - 40 hours/week.

About the City of Portland Parks, Recreation and Facilities:

The Portland Parks, Recreation, and Facilities Department is comprised of 160 full-time and over 250 seasonal staff dedicated to enhancing the quality of life in Portland, Maine. They achieve this by operating cultural venues, running community programs (including Before and After School, Swim Lessons, and Senior Adult programs), and maintaining public buildings, waterfront infrastructure, 70 parks, 40+ miles of trails, 13 cemeteries, and 30 playgrounds. Their diverse team, including Park Maintainers, Lifeguards, Event Managers, Horticulturalists, and many others, works collaboratively to provide spaces and opportunities for social connection, recreation, and community development.

Job Summary
This is a working supervisory position involving the direction of staff in the set up and breakdown of events, minor maintenance, life safety inspections and custodial services.

Supervises permanent and non-permanent custodial/operations staff within Public Assembly Facilities

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Supervises and assists custodial staff in the set up and breakdown of City managed public and private events.
  • Supervises and assists custodial staff in the day to day cleaning of City owned facilities and properties.
  • Creates schedules for custodial staff operating under their supervision in City owned facilities and properties.
  • Follows up on concerns and complaints that pertain to Public Assembly Facilities.
  • Maintains appropriate records of work performed, employee schedules, equipment and materials used, and other pertinent information.
  • Inspects work to ensure proper cleaning and sanitizing of restrooms, hall, offices, entrances, and other areas are done properly.
  • Makes minor repairs to tools and equipment as needed or required such as greasing, changing oil or belts.
  • Provides instruction to individuals and crew in terms of equipment usage and safety in accordance with local and state regulation.
  • Works and directs work in inclement weather. Performs snow removal as needed.
  • Works flexible shifts (set two weeks in advance) as needed for event coverage, set up and clean up and other building needs.
  • Performs related work as required.
  • Investigate and review incidents and injury reports that occur within their shift.

    Required Skills & Experience:
  • Considerable knowledge of materials, methods, and techniques commonly used in the cleaning industry.
  • Considerable knowledge of the hazards and applicable safety precautions needed to perform 
    the job.
  • Considerable knowledge of life safety equipment such as fire extinguishers and sprinkler systems.
  • Working knowledge of accident investigation and reporting.
  • Working knowledge of precautions needed surrounding cleaning chemicals.
  • Ability to layout, direct and supervise staff performing custodial or operations work and the ability to achieve efficient results.
  • Ability to read and understand event set-up sheets and the flexibility to adapt to the situation to exceed customer satisfaction.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public, private sector contractors, City departments, supervisors and employees to effectively obtain satisfactory work output.
    Training and Experience Desired: 
  • Experience in the custodial, event operations and building maintenance fields. High school graduate; or any equivalent combination of experience and training. 
  • Knowledge of proper lifting and moving techniques necessary to perform a job.
  • Knowledge or previous experience dealing with cleaning agents specifically chemicals used for treating biohazardous waste
  • Fork lift license preferred
  • Knowledge of proper lifting and moving techniques necessary to perform a job. Ability to lift 50 lbs.


Necessary Special Requirements:

  • Must possess a valid Class C driver's license. 
  • Must have and maintain a good driving record.


Expected Hours/Schedule: 

This is a 40 hour position working varied hours based on building needs and events scheduled.

Salary & Benefits:

This is a union position, Supervisors Grade 27 with a starting pay range of $27.16 to $32.04 per hour, based on relevant years of experience.
