The Portland Parks, Recreation, and Facilities Department is comprised of 160 full-time and over 250 seasonal staff dedicated to enhancing the quality of life in Portland, Maine. They achieve this by operating cultural venues, running community programs (including Before and After School, Swim Lessons, and Senior Adult programs), and maintaining public buildings, waterfront infrastructure, 70 parks, 40+ miles of trails, 13 cemeteries, and 30 playgrounds. Their diverse team, including Park Maintainers, Lifeguards, Event Managers, Horticulturalists, and many others, works collaboratively to provide spaces and opportunities for social connection, recreation, and community development.

Job Summary:

The City of Portland Aquatics Division is offering a unique opportunity to make a difference in the Portland community as an adapted aquatics instructor Various shifts are available including mornings, days, afternoons, evenings and weekends. Adapted Aquatics Instructors are responsible for teaching water safety and swimming skills to children or adults with physical, developmental, cognitive, or sensory disabilities. The ability to promote safety in and around the Portland pools is also desirable.


Required Skills & Experience:

  • Promising candidates will have strong communication skills and the ability to effectively communicate with clients and families.
  • Ability to monitor participants for safety and adjust teaching to accommodate various levels.
  • Ability to work efficiently, compassionately and with empathy.
  • Prior experience working with people with disabilities is required.
  • Experience in physical therapy, occupational therapy, adapted physical education, special education, aquatic instruction, or similar field required.
  • Experience teaching swim lessons or as a water safety instructor (WSI) preferred.
  • Adult and Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED Certification required.
  • American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (WSI) Certification preferred.
  • American Red Cross Lifeguarding with CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and First AidCertification also preferred. Must attach copies of certifications to your application.


Expected Hours/Schedule:
Various shifts are available including mornings, days, afternoons, evenings and weekends.

Salary:
This is an on-call position with a starting pay range of $19.00-$21.00 per hour, based on certifications.
