The Department of Public Works helps keep the city of Portland moving each day with many areas of responsibility. We collect your garbage and recycling, clear your streets of ice and snow in the winter, help maintain the city's sewer system, build your sidewalks, manage the city's traffic lights and street signage, and the list goes on.
Job Summary:
Join the City of Portland's Public Works Department as a Senior Administrative Officer II and become a vital part of our Finance Team! In this dynamic, fast-paced role, you will be instrumental in managing essential financial functions, including payroll, accounts receivable, accounts payable, and purchasing. We are looking for a highly organized, detail-oriented professional with exceptional customer service skills and a commitment to maintaining confidentiality, particularly with personnel matters. This position offers the opportunity to apply your expertise and make a significant impact by ensuring accuracy and meeting critical deadlines.
Duties & Responsibilities:
Processes the department's payroll, ensuring strict compliance with union contracts and regulations.
Conducts payroll data entry, auditing, and reporting, serving as a key liaison to the Payroll Division.
Assists in compiling departmental budget data, monitoring budget execution, and analyzing spending.
Administers purchasing requests, personnel transactions, and records processing.
Identifies operational/policy problems, conducts research/analysis, and recommends new methods/procedures to management.
Acts as a liaison between the department and other City departments, government agencies, and external groups.
Performs other job-related administrative and financial duties as assigned.
Required Skills & Experience:
Associate's degree in public or business administration or a closely related field and experience in public management and administration; or an equivalent combination of education, experience, and training which provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the work.
Knowledge of accounting and payroll administration principles.
Strong research and analysis skills.
Ability to analyze and resolve administrative, accounting, and payroll issues, and to develop procedures.
Excellent oral and written communication and customer service skills.
Proficiency in database management and spreadsheet software.
Ability to build and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues, leadership, other departments, and the public.
Strong collaborative skills.
Expected Hours/Schedule:
Full-Time, 37.5 hours per week, Monday - Friday, 8 AM - 4:30 PM

Salary & Benefits:
This is a non-union position, Grade 25, salary range $29.58 - $32.32/hr.
