City of Portland - Certified Code Enforcement Officer

Permitting & Inspections Department

Join a dynamic team that helps enhance the safety and quality of life of Portland's residents, visitors, and workers. The City's Permitting and Inspections Department seeks a full-time Housing Safety Code Enforcement Officer for compliance with Maine Uniform Building and Energy Code (MUBEC), National Fire Protection Association Codes (NFPA), Zoning and other applicable building codes and standards as it relates to the inspection of residential rental properties. In partnership with various regulatory agencies, the code enforcement officer candidate will share the responsibilities to assure safe housing. The position works independently in the field and as part of the Licensing and Housing Safety Division team with three other field inspectors. Fostering positive relationships with landlords and tenants is a key objective, while also ensuring safe rental housing.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Candidates must have excellent customer service skills to be able to work with a diverse population which includes property owners, property managers, tenants, contractors and the general public.
The preferred candidate will have education, knowledge and/or experience in building code enforcement and interpretation, principles and practices of building construction, home inspections, fire protection and general inspection work.

Required Skills & Experience:

The candidate must successfully obtain the State of Maine Certification for a Code Enforcement Officer in areas of Residential Building Code, Land Use and Court Rule 80K within 12 months of appointment and must also obtain certification as a Certified Fire Inspector (CFI-1).
Must have a valid State of Maine Class C driver's license, access to a vehicle for daily work use, and must have and maintain a good driving record.

Salary & Benefits:

This is a union position, CEBA Grade 18M-SP, Salary range starting at $33.66/hour.
