City of Portland - Auto Technician II

Public Works Department – Fleet Services

Up to $2,500 Sign on Bonus Available to an external candidate.

The Department of Public Works is seeking a skilled individual to perform general service, overhaul and repair work on light and heavy-duty trucks and other automotive mechanical equipment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Performs skilled mechanical work of a difficult and complex nature in the general overhaul and maintenance of heavy equipment.
Tests, repairs, and reconditions ignition systems, power transmissions, diesel motors, converters, and turbo charges.
Inspects equipment and vehicles to determine scope of repair necessary and the type of repair and work to be performed.
Inspects, adjusts, and replaces parts of complex gasoline and diesel engines, including valves, pistons, main bearings, transmissions, and power take-off systems.
Operates a variety of diagnostic instruments, as well as a variety of hand, electric, and air-driven tools.
Maintains records of vehicle repair and equipment and parts used.

Requirements of Work:

Considerable knowledge and high degree of skill in recognizing, locating, and adjusting defects in automotive and diesel equipment.
Considerable knowledge of standard practices and equipment of the automotive technician trade.
Considerable knowledge of the principles of gasoline and diesel engines, of mechanical repair on heavy trucks, and on construction and specialized equipment.
Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
Ability to understand and carry out oral and/or written instructions including complex technical instructions and specifications.
Ability to adapt available tools and repair parts to specific repair problems.
Skill and care in the use of tools employed in automobile repair adjustment work.
Physical strength and agility necessary to perform the essential functions under exposure to varied climatic conditions.

Training and Experience:

High School diploma and completion of specialized course in heavy equipment maintenance, or an equivalent combination of experience and training, required. This position requires knowledge of diagnosis, operation of gasoline and diesel engines, and standard practices of the mechanic trade.

Must possess a valid Maine Class B driver's license (Class A desired) or have ability to obtain within six (6) months (City will help to obtain Class A or B license).
Must possess valid Vehicle Inspection License A, D & E (can obtain within six (6) months) and must provide copies of license.
Successful applicants must pass pre-employment medical exam and fitness assessment and pass federally mandated drug test upon attainment of CDL permit.
Must have and maintain a good driving record.

Offers of employment are contingent upon the completion of a satisfactory criminal background check.

Salary & Benefits:

This is a union position, LABOR & TRADES (Grade 61) – Starting salary range: $29.92/hr. to $34.17/hr.
Applicant will also receive $.50 for each valid ASE up to a total of eight (8).
