About Public Health:
The Portland Public Health Division, located at 39 Forest Avenue, strives to improve the health of all people in the community by working together to prevent disease, promote health, and protect residents from environmental threats.
Job Summary:
Public Health is actively seeking individuals to positively impact the health status of Portland's non-English speaking immigrant and refugee populations. This position will assist in helping patients access health resources and services, and assist in the coordination of care for clients. In addition to providing interpretation, translation, and cultural brokering services, this position will conduct community outreach on various health issues and public health related topics. As a Community Health Outreach Worker, individuals would potentially be involved with working on various initiatives and projects in collaboration with diverse community partners.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
Work directly with community members to provide interpretation, translation, outreach, and cultural brokering services
Provide services to staff members within the City who require any interpretation or translation services, with special regard to navigating medical care access
Quickly, completely, and accurately interpret spoken words from one language to another and quickly, accurately, and completely translate written documents from one language to another
Perform simultaneous and consecutive interpretation
Provide "meaning for meaning" interpreting, preserving the register of speech and all of its relevant characteristics
Write comprehensively and spell correctly in both languages
Required Skills & Experience:
Must be at least 20 years old
Must have a high school diploma or equivalent; some university education is preferred
Must be computer literate
Must pass English skills written exam with a score of 70 or higher
Must pass an oral test in a target language hired for
Must possess a valid Maine driver's license, maintain a clean driving record, and have a personal vehicle available for work use
Additional Skills & Experience for Basic, Medical, or Health Translators:
Be a certified translator, with a minimum score of 11 in ALTA translation test/or equivalent as required
Able to complete and return assignments within two weeks of signing work contract
Able to work with a proof-reader to complete assignments
Additional Skills & Experience for Proofreaders:
Able to complete and return assignments within two weeks of signing work contract
Able to work with original translator
Additional Skills & Experience for Medical Interpreters:
Have completed medical interpreter training
Have completed a training in HIPAA confidentiality
Additional Skills & Experience for Outreach Workers:
Be a member of the community they serve
Able to demonstrate strong community ties
Able to accomplish community outreach within targeted timeline
Able to show ability to engage and recruit community members for public health interventions, such as focus groups, outreach meetings, health fairs, and screening events, etc.
Expected Hours/Schedule:
This is an on-call position, hours may vary

Salary:
This is a per diem position, with a starting pay rate of $20/hour.
