The City of Portland is hiring a Supervising Urban Ranger to lead and support a team of Urban Rangers dedicated to maintaining safety, order, and positive community interactions in public spaces. This position is responsible for supervising Urban Rangers, enforcing City ordinances, fostering community relationships, and coordinating closely with the Police Department. This position will be embedded in the Community Policing Unit and work in partnership with the Parks and Recreation Department.
This role involves enforcing City rules through voluntary compliance and citations, supervising and scheduling Urban Ranger staff, and maintaining a visible presence through regular patrols of parks, downtown, and neighborhoods. Responsibilities include responding to emergencies, providing basic first aid, assisting the public, and coordinating with emergency services. The position also supports special events through traffic direction and crowd control, maintains daily reports, and fosters positive relationships with the community. Additionally, it includes recommending program improvements, hiring decisions, and budget needs to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of the Urban Ranger program.
Requirements:
Candidates must be able to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
Strong interpersonal and conflict resolution skills are essential along with the ability to work successfully and respectfully with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
Knowledge of park or natural resource management is required.
Candidates must be able to work outside in all weather conditions, walk long distances and ride a bicycle on trails.
Necessary Special Requirements:
Must possess valid Class C driver's license in good standing.
Certification in CPR and First Aid (or the ability to obtain within 6 months of appointment date) is also required.
Expected Hours/Schedule:
This is a 37.5 hour position that requires the ability to work a flexible schedule including evenings and weekends.

Salary & Benefits:
This is a union position, CEBA (Grade 18) - Salary range starting at $1,114.88/week, plus $3.00 stipend for all hours worked.
